The Eastern Bonsai Society, the oldest and best-established club in Johannesburg, celebrating its 48th birthday this year. The members have vast knowledge and experience to share.
The course runs over a 6-month period on the 2nd Saturday of the month 11-12.30 starting on
10th August 2019 and includes guidance from beginning to complete Bonsai. Besides the practical classes in choosing and selecting trees, basic styling techniques and how to pot a tree presented by various experienced club, the following topics and modules will also be covered:
Introduction to, as well as origins and myths of Bonsai.
Suitable trees. Basic styles and forms. Japanese and South African styles.
Selection of material. Choosing nursery stock. Collected stock from gardens and nature.
Tools, soils, containers.
Wiring and practical application.
Pruning. Nipping. Watering. Aftercare. Housing of trees. Winter care.
Pests and diseases.
The course is free to people joining the Eastern Bonsai Society. Membership is R350 a year with family and pensioner discounts. There is a once off joining fee of R300.
Besides the course new members also benefit from all other club activities listed below, including talks, demos, workshops, library, shop and yearly show.
BENIFITS OF JOINING THE CLUB
The club has 12 meetings a year-the 2nd Saturday of the month from 12.30 till 4 pm. It takes place at Hospice Wits situated at 52 Second avenue Houghton.
There is an informative talk/demonstration at meetings followed by a hands-on club workshop where you can work on your tree, get help and advice. Beginners up to Bonsai master level accommodated. All this takes place in a relaxed atmosphere with tea/coffee and cake.
Members are encouraged to bring a tree to display and every month a lucky member wins a R50.00 gift voucher to spend at the club shop.
Any paid-up member can take out books and magazines from the well stocked library and return them at the next meeting.
The club probably boasts the best stocked Bonsai shop in Gauteng stocked with Bonsai pots, soil, all thicknesses of wire and top quality imported Japanese tools....in short everything you need for your hobby at very affordable prices.
Membership also includes membership of regional and national bonsai association with access to all their meetings, shows and competitions at reduced prices.
